Eighteen Top-Five Finishes Propels Red Raiders to a Victory at Ursinus Classic

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.
- On the strength of five first-place finishes and 18 top-five finishes,
the Shippensburg men’s indoor track and field team bested 14 other
schools to win the 2007 Ursinus Classic on Saturday. The Red Raiders totaled
143.9 points for the victory, 52.7 points ahead of second-place Johns Hopkins.
Shippensburg wasted no time earning the first of its five event victories
on Saturday, winning the pole vault to open competition. Sophomore Don
Graybill (Ephrata/Cocalico) won the pole vault with a vault of 14 feet, six inches,
while freshman Andrew Campolongo (State College/State College) earned third
place with a vault of 14 feet.
Shortly after the pole vault, red-shirt freshman Leander Toney (Lancaster/J.P.
McCaskey) won the high jump with a leap of 2.09 meters while Graybill tied
for third place with a jump of 1.92 meters.
Shippensburg placed three in the top five of the shot put. Junior Shaun
Minnich (Churchville/Council Rock South) won the event with a throw of 49 feet, 6.25
inches, while freshman Steve D’Arcy (Hanover, N.J./East Hanover) earned
third place with a heave of 45 feet, 11.5 inches. Fellow freshman Tappah
Dinnall (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) earned fourth place with a toss of 45
feet, 10 inches.
Senior Maurice Barbour (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) won the triple jump with
a jump of 14.61 meters while sophomore Stephen Gualberti (Springfield/Springfield) earned fifth place with a jump of 13.05 meters.
Sophomore Jeremy Brady (Heidelberg AFB/Heidelberg American) won the 3,000-meter
run by more than two minutes over Cabrini’s Eddie Penatar, recording
a time of 8:52.86. Brady would later finish fourth in the 1-mile run, completing
the run in 4:36.31.
Several Red Raiders came within seconds of earning first-place finishes of
their own. Among them, junior Sean Cohick (Shippensburg/Big Spring) earned
second place in the long jump with a leap of 6.75 meters.
Junior James Wilson (Ephrata/Ephrata) earned second place in the 55-meter
dash with a time of 6.67 seconds, while Cohick was right behind for a third-place
finish in 6.71. Cheyney’s Cyrus Wesley won the event with a time of
6.48 seconds.
Shippensburg also finished second in the 400-meter relay, as Barbour, senior
Eric Baker (Montoursville/Montoursville), senior Jamal
James (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and freshman Brad Bechtal
(Reading/Schuylkill Valley) finished with
a time of 3:29.89.
Additionally, in the 800-meter run, freshman Ryan Boyer (Shamokin/Southern
Columbia) finished in third with a time of 2:03.19, while sophomore Rob
Kuliczkowski (Philadelphia/Father Judge) took home fourth place with a time of 2:03.81.
Also, freshman Mike Cuppari (East Hanover, N.J./East Hanover) finished fourth
in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.21, while Gualberti finished fifth
in 8.43.
Shippensburg will have the remainder of the month off, and will return to
action on Friday, January 11 at the PSAC East Challenge from Kutztown. Competition
will begin at 10:30 a.m.
