Freshman Pace Red Raiders to Strong Showing at Bison Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University men's track and field team opened the 2005-06 season on Saturday in the Bison Opener hosted by Bucknell University, totaling 21 top-10 finishers in their respective events.
In the 60-meter dash, sophomore Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) placed third with a time of 7.01 seconds, finishing just off the first-place time of 6.89 seconds. Freshman James Wilson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Ephrata) took sixth-place and freshman Sean Cohick (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) finished in eighth.
James once again took third-place in the 200 meters, running the race in a time of 22.52 seconds. Cohick finished seventh and sophomore Alex Terrell (Cardiff, Wales/Radyf Comp) placed eighth. Wilson also snuck into the top-10, finishing in ninth.
Terrell also earned a sixth-place finish in the 400 meters, but sophomore Eric Baker (Montoursvile, Pa./Montoursville) grabbed fourth in a time of 51.76 seconds.
In the 3,000-meter run, freshman Dillion Gracey (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) and junior Greg Weiss (Newfoundland, N.J./West Miflord) placed in sixth and seventh respectively, finishing in times of 8:53.81 and 8:54.95.
Freshman Mike Murphy (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico) took ninth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.75.
The men's 4x400 relay team comprised of Baker, senior Kenrick Marsh (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), senior Steve Huffman (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) and sophomore Maurice Barbour (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) grabbed a fifth-place finish.
Barbour also faired well in the triple jump, bringing in a third-place finish with a leap of 13.40 meters.
The Red Raiders dominated the throwing events, placing three in the top seven. Junior James Dart (Havertown, Pa./Havertown Township) took second-place with a toss of 15.55 meters. Sophomore Mark Anderson (Nanty Glo, Pa./Central Cambria) took fifth place and junior David Green (Waynesboro, Pa./South Western) grabbed seventh.
In the weight throw, junior Nathan Reider (York, Pa./Dallastown) took fifth-place with a toss of 16.23 meters.
Shippensburg will return to action next Friday, December 9, in nearby Carlisle for the Dickinson Holiday Meet hosted by Dickinson College.
