Red Raider Track and Field Opens Season with Impressive Showing at Bison Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg men’s track and field squad traveled to the Bucknell Bison Opener on Saturday and opened it’s 2006-07 winter campaign by placing 16 athletes in the top 10.

Top finisher for the Red Raiders was freshman McKenzy Rene, who placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.34 meters. Freshman teammate Allan Lehman recorded a distance of 12.60 meters, which earned him a ninth-place finish.

Junior Mark Anderson (Nanty Glo, Pa./Central Cambria), a three-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champion a year ago, opened his season with a fifth-place throw of 15.02 meters in the shot put. Senior teammate Nate Reider (York, Pa./Dallastown) finished one spot behind with a throw of 14.85 meters.

The Red Raiders dominated the 200-meter dash, with four runners finishing in the top-10. Sophomore James Wilson (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) was the top finisher, placing sixth with a time of 23.02. Junior Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) grabbed seventh, sophomore Sean Cohick (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) placed eighth and senior Ryan Koppenheffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished in ninth.

James and Cohick also turned in solid performances in the 60-meter dash, placing ninth and tenth respectively. In the 400-meter dash, Freshman Ken Kull and senior Eric Baker (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) also placed ninth and tenth respectively.

In the 60-meter high hurdles, senior Bernie Richards (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern York) grabbed fifth with a time of 8.45, and freshman Dan Robinson placed sixth with a time of 8.47 after clocking a time of 8.41 in the prelims.

Shippensburg’s 4x400-meter relay team comprised of Richards, Baker, freshman Joe Wagner and freshman Mike Tomasco placed fifth with a time of 3:27.55. Freshman Dan Graybill placed ninth in the high jump and freshman Mike Edwards earned 10th in the long jump.

The Red Raiders return to action on Fri., Dec. 8 at the DuCharme Invitational in Carlisle, Pa.
