Dec. 1, 2007
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Jamal James (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) began his final season for the Shippensburg men’s track team by picking up right where he left off last year, winning the 200-meter dash and totaling three top-five finishes at the Bison Opener on Saturday inside Gerhard Field House on the campus of Bucknell University.
Last season, James shattered the record in the 200-meter dash at the PSAC Indoor Championships with a time of 21.94 seconds that allowed him to compete at the NCAA championships. On Saturday, James nearly matched that effort, besting 42 competitors with a time of 22.44 seconds.
In the long jump, James finished in third place with a leap of 22 feet, 3.75 inches, while in the 60-meter dash he took home fifth place with a time of 6.98 seconds.
Three Red Raiders earned top-10 finishes in the triple jump. Senior Maurice Barbour (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) finished in second place with a leap of 46.75 feet, while sophomore Allen Lehman (Greencastle/Greencastle) took home fourth place with a jump of 44 feet. Freshman Jesse Brown finished in ninth place with a jump of 42.5 feet.
Junior Shaun Minnich (Churchville/Council Rock South) led the throwers on Saturday with two top-ten finishes. Minnich finished in fifth place in the weight throw with a toss of 53.25 feet while earning sixth place in the shot put with a throw of 51 feet.
Rounding out the top-ten finishers were freshman Brandon Boyer (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and red-shirt freshman Leander Toney (Lancaster/McCaskey). In the 3,000-meter run, Boyer finished in fourth with a time of 9:36.06, while Toney tied for seventh place with a hurdle of 6.25 feet.
Shippensburg will be in action next weekend at the Ursinus Open, which begins at 9:00 a.m.
