SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - After recording NCAA qualifying times and first-place
finishes at the PSAC outdoor championships,
seniors Bernie Richards (York Haven/Northeastern York) and Nate
Reider (York/Dallastown) will represent Shippensburg University at
the NCAA Division II Track and Field Outdoor Championships May 24-26 at the
Irwin Belk Complex on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte,
North Carolina.
Reider is making his third-straight appearance in the javelin after winning his second-straight conference championship. His throw of 64.34 meters at the PSAC outdoor championships has him seeded third heading into the national championships. Reider's mark is just behind Fort Hayes State's Garret Edgard, who is seeded second with a distance of 64.65 meters.
Reider earned All-America honors at last year's NCAA championships, finishing sixth.
Richards, who qualified in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, is making his first appearance at the NCAA championships and is one of only three athletes from the PSAC that qualified in two events. He won his first career title at the PSAC outdoor championships, capturing the 400-meter hurdle championship while finishing sixth in the 110-meter hurdles.
Richards time of 14.41 seconds in the 110 hurdles ranks him 17th heading into the national championships, just behind the 16th-seeded Kenan Briggs of Cal State-Los Angeles. In the 400 hurdles, Richards is seeded 16th with a time of 52.53 seconds.
