Helfrick Wins 10,000 Meters on First Day of PSAC Outdoor Championships

MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Shippensburg University men's track and field team came away with 19 points on Friday and is currently second at the 2005 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Mansfield University. The Red Raiders are currently in second place, trailing Slippery Rock University with 32 points.

The team gathered 10 points from junior Daniel Helfrick (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) who won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:49.29.

Freshman Mark Anderson (Nanty Glo, Pa./Central Cambria) totaled eight points by finishing second in the discus throw with a mark of 147-feet, 11-inches while senior Adam Escamilla (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) added a point with a sixth-place finish with a throw of 140-feet, 6-inches.

Meanwhile, several Red Raiders qualified for the finals of other events to be run tomorrow.

Senior Alton Richards (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) qualified for the finals of the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. He won the heat for the 100 meters in 10.77 seconds and placed second in the heat for the 200 meters with a time of 22.21 seconds.

Freshman Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) also qualified for both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash finals with a time of 11.09 and 22.38 seconds, respectively.

Other qualifiers included junior Kenrick Marsh (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) who qualified for the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.17 and sophomore Bernard Richards (York Haven, Pa./ Eastern York) who qualified for the 110-meter hurdles with a mark of 15.42 seconds.

Senior Mark Piccolo (Quakerstown, Pa./Quakerstown) qualified for the finals of the 400-meter hurdles by finishing with the best heat time at 52.60 seconds.

Competition will conclude at the PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday with events beginning at 9:00 a.m., at Mansfield.
