Red Raiders Earn Fourth Straight PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Shippensburg University men's outdoor track and field team earned its fourth consecutive PSAC Championship on Saturday, recording 17 Top-5 finishes en route to the victory.
The Red Raiders finished the competition with 168 points, while Slippery Rock University finished in second place with 140.5 points. For Shippensburg, it is the 10th PSAC Outdoor Track Championship won by the school in the past 16 years.
Under the guidance of head coach Dave Osanitch, Saturday's victory marks the second PSAC Championship won by the men's track and field team this year. In February, the men's indoor track and field team won its second-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Championship in competition held at East Stroudsburg University.
Twelve athletes placed in the Top-5 on Saturday for the Red Raiders. Sophomore Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) earned two Top-5 finishes, finishing in second place for the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.67 seconds and in fifth place for the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.91 seconds.
Junior Bernie Richards (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern York) recorded an NCAA provisional time of 53.27 seconds with his second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Richards also finished in third place for the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.72 seconds.
Shippensburg earned second and third-place finishes in both the 800 and 1,500-meter runs. senior Kenrick Marsh (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) finished in second place for the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.97, while junior Greg Weiss (Newfoundland, N.J./West Milford) finished in third place with a time of 1:56.66.
In the 1,500-meter run, junior Allen Hanslovan (Morisdale, Pa./West Branch) finished second with a time of 3:57.84, while senior John Somers (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) finished just behind Hanslovan in third place with a time of 3:57.87.
The duo also recorded valuable points in the 5,000-meter run as well, with Somers taking second place with an NCAA provisional time of 14:47.16. Hanslovan took fourth in the event after running in 14:52.30.
In relay events, the 100-meter relay team took second place with a time of 41.69 seconds. the 400-meter relay team of Marsh, Richards, sophomore Eric Baker (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) and senior Steve Huffman (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) placed third with a time of 3:17.15.
Shippensburg had jumped out
to an early lead in the competition as a result of three first-place
finishes on Friday. Sophomore Mark
Anderson (Nanty Glo, Pa./Central Cambria) earned two first-place
finishes for Shippensburg, winning the discus throw with a toss
of 146 feet 5 inches and the hammer throw with a throw of 162 feet
5 inches.
Junior Nate Reider (York, Pa./Dallastown) earned the other
first-place finish on Friday for Shippensburg, taking the javelin throw
with a throw of 211 feet 7 inches.
Several athletes will now begin preparing for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to be held in Emporia, Kansas. The Division II Championships begin on Thursday, May 25.
