Red Raiders In First Place Heading Into Final Day of PSAC Championships

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - On the basis of three first-place finishes, the Shippensburg University men's track and field team is currently in first place heading into the final day of competition at the PSAC Championships currently being held at California University of Pennsylvania.
The Red Raiders currently have 54 points, and hold a 14-point lead over second-place Slippery Rock University.
Sophomore Mark Anderson
(Nanty Glo, Pa./Central Cambria) earned two first-place
finishes for Shippensburg, winning the discus throw with a toss of
146 feet 5 inches and the hammer throw with a throw of 162 feet 5 inches.
Junior Nate Reider (York, Pa./Dallastown) earned the other
first-place finish on the day for Shippensburg, taking the javelin throw
with a throw of 211 feet 7 inches.
Senior Dan Helfrick (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanon) took third place in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:11.14. Helfrick finished behind Lock Haven's Ryan Blood and Slippery Rock's Jeff Weiss. Weiss took first with a time of 30:43.21.
In qualifying times, sophomore Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) tied with Cheyney's Cyrus Wesley with identical times of 21.54 seconds to qualify in second place for the 200-meter dash. James qualified third for the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.82 seconds.
Junior Bernie Richards (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern York) qualified second for the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.88 seconds and first for the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.62 seconds.
In the 800-meter run, Shippensburg
qualified two runners in the Top 5. Junior Greg Weiss (Newfoundland,
N.J./West Milford) qualified in second place with a time of
1:55.65, while senior Kenrick
Marsh (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) qualified in fourth place
with a time of 1:55.72.
The men's and women's track and field teams return to action on Saturday,
May 6 at the PSAC Outdoor Championships held at California University
(Pa.).
