SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -
Senior Nate Reider (York/Dallastown) captured his first individual conference title in the hammer throw to lead a 1-2 Shippensburg finish and help the Red Raiders to a second-place showing following the first full day of competition at the 2007 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at Shippensburg's Seth Grove Stadium.

Shippensburg is currently in second-place with 34 total points, 15 behind first-place Slippery Rock.

Reider, who entered the competition seeded fourth and finished seventh in the hammer a year ago, won his second overall PSAC championship after placing first in the javelin last year. His mark of 168' 6" was over four-feet farther than his season-high and seed of 164'.

Junior Mark Anderson (Nanty Glo/Central Cambria), last year's winner, placed second with a mark of 166' 4" while senior David Green (Waynesboro/South Western) who finished second last year and was seeded second this year, placed fifth.

Green was Shippensburg's top place-winner in the discus, finishing fifth with a throw of 149' 5".

The other top placewinner for Shippensburg on Friday was sophomore Sean Cohick (Newville/Big Spring) in the long jump who placed fifth with a leap of 23' 3.25" that was better than his previous season-best of 22' 8.5" set at the Fred Hardy Invitational.

In the decathlon, freshman Don Graybill (Ephrata/Cocalico) earned a seventh-place finish for the Red Raiders with a total of 5,882 points. He finished the first day in 10th-place with a total of 3,010 points, but moved up in the standings thanks to fourth-place finishes in the 1,500-meter run and pole vault.

Also on Saturday, Shippensburg had athletes qualify for Saturday finals in six events, led by senior Bernie Richards (York Haven/Northeastern York) in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. He was the top qualifier in both events, posting a time of 14.41 seconds the 110 and a mark of 52.92 seconds in the 400. Richards' time in the 110-meter hurdles was a personal-best.

Other notable performances Friday included the 4x100-meter relay team of sophomore James Wilson (Ephrata/Ephrata), junior Jamal James (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin), senior Ryan Koppenheffer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and junior Alex Terrell (Cardiff, Wales/Radyf Comp) who qualified second in 41.86 seconds, a mere 0.03 behind West Chester.

James also qualified second in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash while Wilson came in sixth in the 100 and Terrell qualified sixth in the 200.

In the 400-meter dash, sophomores Joe Wagner (Biglerville/Biglerville) and Eric Baker (Montoursville/Montoursville) qualified third and fifth, respectively, while sophomore Mark Murphy (Reamstown/Cocalico) joined Richards by qualifying third in the 400 hurdles.

The final day of competition at the 2007 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships begins Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.
