Richards Wins Two Hurdle Events for Second-Straight Week

Richards (Yorkhaven, Pa./Northeastern York) captured the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles
for the second consecutive weekend to highlight a strong day of competition
for the Shippensburg University men‚s track and field team at Seth Grove
Stadium on Saturday.
Richards finished with a time of 14.84 seconds in the 110 and a mark of 53.77
seconds in the 400. Richards bested second-place finisher Dan Robinson‚s
time by nearly two seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.
Senior Dan Helfrick (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanon) also earned first-place
finish for Shippensburg, recording a time of 15:25.22 in the 5,000 meter run.
His time was more than two seconds faster than second-place finisher Matt Wagoner.
Four Red Raiders finished in the Top 7 places of the 1,500-meter run, with
junior Greg Weiss (Newfoundland, N.J./West Milford) finishing in first place
with a run of 4:02.35. Helfrick finished in fourth place with a time of 4:03.10,
while freshman Stephen Thompson (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and freshman
Jonathan Hughes (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) took sixth and seventh places respectively.
Shippensburg had five runners finish in the Top 10 of the 200-meter dash, including
three of the top five. Sophomore Alex Terrell (Cardiff, Wales/Radyf
Comp) finished
in third place with a time of 22.07 seconds, freshman Sean Cohick (Newville,
Pa./Big Spring) took fourth with a dash of 22.19 seconds, and freshman James
Wilson (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) finished in fifth place with a time of 22.27
seconds.
In the 100-meter dash, Cohick took fourth place with a time of 11.00 seconds,
while junior Ryan Koppenheffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) took fifth
place with a time of 11.12 seconds.
For the 400-meter dash, sophomore Eric Baker (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) finished in third place with a time of 49.24 seconds, while Devon McKenzie
(Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) took fifth place with a time of 49.71 seconds.
Alumnus Glenn Thompson was the only competitor preventing sophomore Mark
Anderson (Nanty Glo, Pa./Central Cambria) from another first-place finish, as Anderson
took second in the shot put with a throw of 52-feet, 5 inches. Thompson, who
set the school record for the shot put back in 1985, recorded a first-place
throw of 53-feet, 1-inch.
Junior Nathan Reider (York, Pa./Dallastown) finished in second place in the
javelin throw with a mark of 208-feet, 9 inches. Sophomore Jarrod Shull
(Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) took fourth place with a throw of 199-feet.
The 100-meter relay team took first place with a time of 41.96 seconds, while
the 400-meter relay team finished in second place with a time of 3:17.57, less
than a second behind Robert Morris University.
The men's and women's track and field teams return to action on Thursday, May
4 at the PSAC Outdoor Championships held at California University (Pa.).
