Red Raider Distance Runners Turn in Strong Showing at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Shippensburg University junior Allen Hanslovan (Morisdale, Pa./West Branch) turned in a 20th-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, highlighting the track & field squad's performance at the Penn Relays on April 27-28.
Hanslovan's time of 14:25.70 placed him second in his heat. Based on time, he finished in 20th place. Teammate John Somers (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) placed sixth in the heat with a time of 14:29.04.
Junior Bernie Richards (Yorkhaven, Pa./Northeastern York) won his heat in 400-meter hurdles championship with a time or 54.91 seconds and earned a 54th-place finish overall.
The 4x400 relay team comprised for senior Kenrick Marsh (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), senior Steve Huffman (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville), sophomore Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and sophomore Eric Baker (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) took third place with a time of 3:16.77 in the Wetzler/Pennsylvania Race, which featured relay teams from the state of Pennsylvania. Kutztown University took first in the race with a time of 3:15.58.
In the 10,000-meter run, senior Dan Helfrick (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanon) turned in a time of 31:39.49, which was good enough for 36th place.
On the women's side, senior Monica Speca placed 15th in the Eastern division of the high jump event after posting a jump of 1.61 meters.
Both the men's and women's squads return to action on Saturday, April 29 when they host the Paul Kaiser Invitational at Seth Grove Stadium on the Shippensburg University campus. It is the only home event of the year for the track & field teams. Action will get underway at 10 a.m. with the 10,000-meter run.
