Men's Track Takes Home PSAC East Challenge Championship

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Behind seven first-place finishes and 18 top-3 finishes, the Shippensburg University men's track and field team finished in first-place at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Challenge hosted by West Chester University on Saturday.

The championship marks the second for Shippensburg this season after the men also won the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championship in February. The Red Raiders had a total of 207 points, 46 points ahead of Kutztown University in second.

Senior Alton Richards (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) had two victories in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. He ran a time of 10.65 seconds in the 100 meters and posted a mark of 21.66 seconds in the 200 meters. Freshman Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished second behind Richards in the 200-meter dash, posting a mark of 21.93 seconds.

In the 800-meter run, junior Kenrick Marsh (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) took home first-place with a time of 1:55.18. As a team, Shippensburg had eight runners place in the top-12 in the event, including five in the top-10.

Sophomore Richard Hansloven (Morrsidale, Pa./West Branch) won the 1,500-meter run for the Red Raiders in 3:57.96, a mere .02 seconds ahead of junior John Somers (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) who came in second.

Junior Daniel Helfrick (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanon), who was second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:26.26, was fourth in the 1,500 meters. Sophomore Derek Lautenslager (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) was third in the 5,000 meters, posting a mark of 15:52.36.

Other winners for Shippensburg included senior Marc Piccolo (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) in the 400-meter hurdles as well as the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams.

Freshman Maurice Barbour (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 43-feet, 5 1/2-inches and senior John Pacovsky (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) took home second-place in the javelin throw at 188-feet.

Shippensburg heads to Lewisburg, Pa. on Friday to compete in the Bison Classic hosted by Bucknell University.
