Men’s Track Finishes Third At Division-I Laden Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Dan Helfrick (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) earned a first-place finish in the 5,000 meter run to highlight a banner day for the Shippensburg University men’s track and field team Saturday at the Terrapin Invitational held at the University of Maryland.
The Red Raiders had 12 athletes place in the top-8 en route to a third-place team finish, as Shippensburg was bested only by the University of Maryland-College Park and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC).
Two Red Raider sprinters finished in the top-6 places of the 100-meter dash. Sophomore Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished in second place with a time of 10.78 seconds, falling just .19 seconds short of the school record for the event set in 1998 by Dave Brown. Freshman James Wilson (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) took sixth in the event with a time of 11.08 seconds.
Sophomore Mark Anderson (Nanty Glo, Pa./Central Cambria) was the only Red Raider to earn two top-eight finishes, earning fifth place in the shot put with a heave of 14.90 meters and a sixth-place finish with a toss in the hammer throw of 48.40 meters.
Junior Stephen LoBianco (Dover, Pa./Eastern York) continues to place well in the steeplechase, earning second place with a time of 9:47.67.
Meanwhile, freshman David Green (Waynesboro, Pa./South Western) continued his string of strong performances in the discus with a throw of 41.87 meters.
Junior Nate Reider (York, Pa./Dallastown) finished strong in the javelin throw, earning a fourth-place finish with a launch of 58.10 meters. Sophomore Jarrod Shull (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) earned a sixth place finish with a throw of 56.20 meters.
Junior Bernie Richards (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern York) posted a seventh-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.97 seconds while junior Allen Hanslovan (Morrisdale, Pa./West Branch) finished sixth in the 1500 meter run in 3:56.89.
In the pole vault, sophomore Troy Litten (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) took fifth with a vault of 4.27 meters.
On the women’s side, the only place-winner was junior Megan Schweighofer (Tyler Hill, Pa./Honesdale), who placed fifth in the hammer throw with a throw of 49.60 meters.
The men’s and women’s track and field teams will be in action next weekend at the PSAC West Challenge, held at California University (Pa.).
