Red Raiders Turn in Strong Showing at VCU Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. - Shippensburg junior Richard Hanslovan (Morrisdale, Pa./West Branch) and senior John Somers (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) highlighted another strong performance for the Shippensburg University men‚s track and field team at Sports Backers Stadium on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for the 2006 VCU Ram Invitational.

Hanslovan and Somers finished first and second in the men‚s 5000 meter run, and the two runners were the only two that finished in a time under 15 minutes. Hanslovan took first place with a time of 14:54.52, while Somers finished two seconds behind with a time of 14:56.25.

Freshman Dillon Gracey (Mercersburg, Pa./ James Buchanan) nearly cracked the Top-10, finishing in 11th place with a time of 15:25.22.

Sophomore Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) continues to dominate in the 100 meter dash, as he finished fifth with a time of 11.14 seconds.

The 200 meter dash featured several strong performances for the Red Raiders, as five runners finished in the Top-20. Freshman Sean Cohick (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) posted the best time, finishing ninth with a time of 22.82 seconds.

Freshman James Wilson (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) finished in 11th place at 22.87 seconds, sophomore Maurice Barbour (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) tied for 13th place with a time of 22.91 seconds, junior Ryan Koppenheffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) tied for 16th place with a time of 22.97 seconds.

Senior Steve Huffman (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) rounded out the Shippensburg runners in the 200 meter dash with a 19th place finish in 23.04 seconds.

Senior Dan Helfrick (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) finished in third place in the 10,000 meter run, posting a time of 32:20.75. Two runners from Division-I Iona, Mohamed Khadraoui and Sean Connolly, finished first and second.

Junior Bernie Richards (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern York) posted another strong showing in hurdles, finishing in fourth place at the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.19 seconds, and fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.57 seconds. Freshman Brian Kauffman (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) finished in the Top-20, earning an 18th-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.84.

Three runners finished in the Top-20 for the 400 meter dash, with Eric Baker (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) posting a fourth place finish with a time of 49.85 seconds. Huffman finished in ninth place with a time of 50.55 seconds, and junior Devon McKenzie (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) finished in 17th place with a time of 51.26 seconds.

Junior Stephen Lobianco (Dover, Pa./Northeastern York) finished strong in the 3000 meter steeplechase, earning a 10th place finish in 9:57.56. Sophomore Jarrod Shull (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) placed fourth in the javelin throw with a launch of 55.42 meters.

Sophomore Maurice Barbour (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) finished in ninth place for the long jump with a jump of 6.38 meters. Freshman Zach Pretty (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) finished in 11th place with a time of 6.23 meters.

In the shot put, sophomore Mark Anderson (Nanty Glo, Pa./Central Cambria) finished in fourth place with a heave of 14.99 meters, while freshman David Green (Waynesboro, Pa./South Western) finished in ninth place with a toss of 13.95 meters.

Freshman Tyler Shaw (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) recorded an eighth-place finish in the pole vault with a vault of 3.85 meters.

In the relays, Shippensburg finished first in the 400 meter relay with a time of 3:26.36 and fourth place in the 100 meter relay with a time of 42.88 seconds.
