Feb. 12, 2008
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University men's track and field senior Jamal James (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) was named the PSAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for the first time in his career after breaking the school record in the long jump on Saturday.
It is the second time this season that James has been recognized by the conference, having been named Men’s Track Athlete of the Week on January 23.
James recorded an NCAA provisional mark at the Bucknell Winter Classic with his leap of 23’ 9” in the long jump. It is the best effort in the PSAC this season and the fifth-best mark in the nation. The feat eclipsed the previous school record of 23’ 8” that was set in 1998 by Jeff Mills.
James was also a part of the 1,600-meter relay team along with junior Sean Cohick (Shippensburg/Big Spring), freshman Brad Bechtal (Reading/Schuylkill Valley) and senior Eric Baker (Montoursville/Montoursville) that finished first this weekend with a season-best time of 3:24.13, beating Bucknell by 0.75 seconds.
Shippensburg will return to action this weekend at the Susquehanna University Invitational in Selinsgrove.
