Feb. 10, 2007
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Behind
six first-place finishes, the Shippensburg men's track and field team totaled
192.50 points en route to a first-place finish at the PSAC East Challenge
hosted by Kutztown on Saturday. The Red Raiders won by a margin of 81.5
points over second-place East Stroudsburg.
The throwers again took top billing with senior Nate Reider (York/Dallastown) leading a one-two Shippensburg finish in the weight throw with a mark of
59-feet, 9-inches. He had already provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships
in March with his throw of 56-feet, 4 3/4-inches at the Bison Open & Multi,
but today, his mark was good enough for the 11th best throw in Division II.
Meanwhile, senior Mark Anderson (Nanty Glo/Central Cambria) finished second
behind Reider with a mark of 54-feet, 11 1/2-inches which is just off the
NCAA provisional qualifying list. Jeremiah Giambartolomei of Western State
currently holds the final spot at 16.80 meters.
Anderson also placed second in the shot put with a mark of 52-feet, 4 1/4-inches.
He is currently 12th on the NCAA Division II performance list with his mark
of 53-feet, 7 1/2-inches meters set at the DeSchriver Invitational.
Senior Dave Green (Waynesboro/Southwestern) placed third in the shot put
and fourth in the weight throw. His mark of 52-feet, 5 1/4-inches in the
weight throw improved on his season-best mark of 51-feet, 1 1/2-inches set
at the DeSchriver Invitational.
Both Anderson and Green are ranked second and third, respectively, in the
PSAC in the weight throw behind Reider.
Other notable performances included sophomore Joe Wagner (Biglerville/Biglerville) who turned in one of the best all-around performances of the day, taking
first in the 400-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash. His mark of
22.78 seconds in the 200 is good for the fifth-fastest time in the PSAC this
season.
Wagner was also a part of the men‚s 4x400-meter relay team that placed
first in a time of 3:22.08. Wagner, junior Eric Baker (Montoursville/Montoursville),
sophomore Jamal James (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and senior Bernie
Richards (York Haven/Northeastern York) teamed up to post the second fastest time
in the conference, two seconds behind West Chester.
James also overcame a slow start in the 55-meter dash to take third in a
time of 6.59 seconds.
Sophomore Dillon Gracey (Mercersburg/James Buchanan) took first in the 5,000-meter
run in 15:45.93, almost 20 seconds better than Andrew Butler of Millersville
who came in second.
Junior Dan Robinson (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro) led a one-two Shippensburg
finish in the 55-meter hurdles with Richards placing second. Robinson placed
first in 7.82 seconds, just ahead of Richards‚ time of 7.87 seconds.
Another notable performance came from freshman Stephen Gualberti
(Springfield/Springfield) in the pentathlon where he took third-place with a total of 2,829 points.
Junior James Dubinski (Collegeville/St. Pius X) placed sixth with 2,753 points.
The Shippensburg men‚s and women‚s track and field teams return
to action at the Orange and Maroon Classic hosted by Susquehanna on Friday.
