Feb. 5, 2008
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - After recording his third first-place finish of the young season in the high jump at last weekend’s DeSchriver Invitational, Shippensburg red-shirt freshman Leander Toney Jr. (Lancaster/J.P. McCaskey) was named the PSAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
Toney’s mark of 6-8 from Saturday is the second-best in the conference this season, behind his own jump of 6' -10 1/4" at the Ursinus Track Classic that is the fourth-best mark in the nation and the best by a freshman this season.
One week after earning top marks at Ursinus on December 8, Toney won the high jump at the PSAC East Challenge to record two consecutive first-place finishes in the event.
Toney is a member of the Shippensburg men’s indoor track team under head coach Dave Osanitsch that is currently ranked second in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll and is the highest-ranked school in the East Region.
Shippensburg returns to action on Friday at the New Balance Invitational in downtown New York City. Competition begins at 11:30 a.m.
