Somers, Hanslovan Lead Red Raiders on Final Day of Collegiate Invitational

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Shippensburg University men's and women's indoor track and field teams finished competition at the Sixth Annual New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Saturday with strong performances in the one-mile run by senior John Somers (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and junior Allen Hanslovan (Morisdale, Pa./West Branch).
Somers finished in 12th-place with an impressive time of 4:13.94 in the team's first one-mile run of the season, while Hanslovan finished in 31st-place with a time of 4:31.29.
The event with the most place finishers for Shippensburg was the men's 200-meter dash where three Red Raiders finished in the top-100. Sophomore Jamal James (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) posted the best time in the event with a 56th-place finish in 22.62 seconds.
Fellow sophomore Alex Terrell (Cardiff, Wales/Radyf Comp) finished in 92nd-place with a time of 23.63 seconds, nearly matching his best time of 23.27 at the Bison Open. Senior Steve Huffman (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) also finished in the top-100 with a time of 23.75 seconds.
In the men's triple jump, junior Carl Dean (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) placed in the top-30 with a leap of 44-feet, 7 1/2-inches, besting his previous jump of 44-feet, 5 1/4-inches set at the Terrapin Invitational.
Junior Nate Reider (York, Pa./Dallastown) tied for 17th in the men's weight throw with a toss of 51-feet, 10-inches.
On the women's side, the lone Shippensburg representative in action was senior Lindsey Govern (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), who recorded a 28th-place finish in the women's one-mile run, recording a season-best time of 5:20.84. Govern bested her previous season-best by nearly three seconds as she ran the mile in 5:23.72 at the Bison Open.
The Shippensburg men's and women's track and field teams will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to East Stroudsburg University to compete in the Seventh Annual DeSchriver Invitational at Koehler Field House. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m.
