Throwers Highlight Strong Showing For Red Raider Track at Bison Open & Multi

LEWISBURG, Pa. - On Saturday, the throwers on the Shippensburg men's track and field team exemplified why they are routinely one of the top throws programs in the nation, placing five athletes in the top-11 of the shot put and four in the top-10 in the weight throw to highlight the Red Raiders' performance at the Bison Open & Multi hosted by Bucknell.

As a group, the throwers posted three of the top-five distances in the PSAC this season in the weight throw, led by senior Nate Reider (York/Dallastown) whose second-place throw of 56-feet, 4 3/4-inches is the top mark in the conference, over six-feet farther than junior Mark Anderson (Nanty Glo/Central Cambria). Reider was also eighth inthe shot put.

Meanwhile, Anderson's third-place mark of 51-feet, 11 1/4-inches in the shot put is the second-best throw in the PSAC this season, trailing only Steve Tyson of Kutztown who was second with a throw of 52-feet, 1 3/4-inches. Kimani Kirton of Maryland-Eastern Shore won the event with an NCAA provisional mark and facility record throw of 61-feet, 5-inches.

Anderson was also fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 50-feet, 11-inches which tied his previous best set at the DuCharme Invitational on December 8 which is the second-farthest throw in the conference this season.

As for the other Red Raider throwers, sophomore Shaun Minnich (Churchville/Council Rock South) was sixth in the shot put, followed by sophomore Dave Green (Waynesboro/Southwestern) and freshman Justin Kraft (Greentown/Wallenpaupack) in seventh and 11th-place, respectively.

Green's sixth-place throw of 49-feet, 9 3/4-inches in the weight throw is the third-best mark in the PSAC, behind Reider and Green. Junior Justin Ackerman (Broomal/Marple-Newtown) placed 10th in Saturday's weight throw with a mark of 46-feet, 10-inches which was good enough for the fifth-farthest throw in the conference.

Under assistant coach Kurt Dunkel in the past eight seasons, Shippensburg has boasted 95 conference placewinners, 15 conference champions, 35 NCAA qualifiers, nine All-Americans, 10 school record holders, three conference championship record holders and one Academic All-American.

Sophomore Jamal James (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and sophomore Joe Wagner (Biglerville/Biglerville) were winners for the second-straight week at Bucknell with James taking first in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.49 seconds and Wagner capturing the 400-meter dash in 49.62 seconds.

Each time was season-bests for both James and Wagner while Wagner's mark was the second-fastest in the PSAC this season. James' time is currently the third-fastest.

Sophomore James Wilson (Ephrata/Ephrata) placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.05 seconds, exactly one week after he placed finished second in the 55-meter dash at the Bucknell Heptagonal. Senior Bernie Richards (York Haven/Northeastern York) also had a runner-up finish for the Red Raiders, placing second in the 500-meter dash.

Other notable Shippensburg finishes included freshman Joshua Neyhart (Kutztown/Kutztown) who was third in the 3,000-meter run, Richard and junior Dan Robinson (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro) who tied for third in the 60-meter hurdles and junior Maurice Barbour (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) who was third in the triple jump.

Also, the team of Neyhart, freshman Ryan Drzewiecki (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove), senior Greg Weiss (Newfoundland, N.J./West Milford) and senior Allen Hanslovan (Morrisdale/West Branch) placed first in the disance medley.

On Friday, the Shippensburg track and field teams begin competition in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York at 11:00 a.m. The two-day event concludes on Saturday with competition starting at 9:00 a.m.
