Red Raider Baseball Concludes Fall Season With World Series, Alumni Game

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - In preparation to defend its 2007 PSAC championship, the Shippensburg University baseball team concluded its fall season with the conclusion of its annual Fall World Series and Alumni Game on October 20. The Blue team won the Fall World Series 3-1-1 before the Red Raider posted a 9-0 victory over the Alumni.
Below is a game-by-game recap of both events.
Fall World Series Game 3 - Blue Outlasts White, 6-5
The Blue team squandered a 5-1 lead, but got one run in the top of the seventh inning to take game three of the Fall World Series by a score of 6-5.
Blue jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning thanks to two RBIs from sophomore Rick Shumway (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) and RBI single from junior Andrew Burke (Fayetville/Chambersburg) before adding to its lead with two runs in the top of the second to take a 5-1 advantage.
White cut the deficit to 5-2 with a run in the bottom of fifth and after holding Blue scoreless in the top half of the sixth, put up three in the bottom half to tie the game at 5-5. Junior Jason Kelly (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) doubled home two runs, freshman Kevin Miller (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) also knocked in a run.
Relief pitching from junior Matt Wright (McClure/Mid-West) allowed White to get back in the contest as he pitched four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven in relief of sophomore Phil Harnick (Lancaster/Hempfield).
However, Blue was able to get one run in the top of the seventh inning to take a one-run leade before Burke pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
Fall World Series Game Four - Blue Takes Second One-Run Victory, 8-7
The Blue team used solid offensive effort and escaped a late-inning, bases loaded jam to knock off the White team and take game four of the Fall World Series, 8-7.
White jumped out to a 4-0 lead after junior Tyler Reddick (Fairfield/Walkersville (Md.)) led off with a hit and later scored on an RBI-single by junior Jason Kelly (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin). Freshman Matt Emerich (Mertztown/Brandywine) also had an RBI-single while junior Kasey Kuhns (Three Springs/Southern Huntingdon) followed by knocking in two runs.
However, Blue would tie the game at 4-4 heading into the third with two runs in the first and two in the second.
White went ahead 5-4 with a run in the fourth and then extended that lead to 7-4 with two more runs in the top of the fifth. Blue stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 7-7 before White loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh.
Junior Andrew Burke (Fayettville/Chambersburg) came out of the bullpen and retired the side, opening the door for his Blue team which scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, notching the win for Burke who picked up the save in game three.
Eight of the nine starters on the Blue team contributed at least one RBI in the game, led by freshman Kevin Scholly (State College/State College) who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Junior Timothy Freshour (Johnstown/Richland) also had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Fall World Series Game Five - White Gets Its First Win in Series Finale, 4-0
Solid pitching enable the White team to pick up its first victory in the final game of the Fall World Series, 4-0.
The White pitching staff held the Blue team to just four hits over the course of seven innings with junior Matt Wright (McClure/Mid-West) picking up the victory after throwing two innings in relief of junior Thomas Ashman (Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley).
Also combining on the shutout for the White team were freshman Drew Rentzell (Dover/Red Land), freshman Shane Barrett (Huntingdon Valley/Lower Moreland) and senior Brandon Geib (Lilitz/Warwick).
Offensively, junior Sean Killian (Columbia/Hempfield) tripled in a run and scored. Also driving in runs were junior Kasey Kuhns (Three Springs/Southern Huntingdon) and freshman Ashton Taughninbaugh (Biglerville/Biglerville).
The Blue team concluded the five-game Fall World Series with a 3-1-1 series victory.
Alumni Game
Head Coach Matt Jones would like to thank all alumni who came out and participated in the annual Alumni Game in which the Red Raiders prevailed over the Alumni, 9-0.
Jones would also like to send out a special thank you to the alums, family and friends of the Shippensburg baseball program that made the Alumni Game and cookout a success.
The Red Raiders open the season with a four-game series at Mount Olive February 16 and 17.
