YORK, Pa. - Home runs by sophomore Justin Garber (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and junior Tyler Wise (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) helped to power the offense as the Shippensburg University baseball team swept a doubleheader against Millersville University, 7-6 and 4-2, at McWilliams Field on Tuesday.
The Red Raiders (19-19) have won five of their last six and took the season series with their local Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division rival, 3-2. Senior Chad Stecker (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) was a combined 4-for-7 in the doubleheader and scored the game-winning run in the first game.
In game one, the Marauders tallied four runs in the bottom of the third inning, three of which were unearned as a result of two errors, to take a 4-1 lead.
Shippensburg totaled six runs over the final four innings and trailing 5-3 after five innings, scored three in the sixth and one decisive run in the seventh for the victory. Senior Ryan Miscik (Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant) hit a two-RBI single to tie the game in the sixth, scoring junior Nick Erdman (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and junior Jeremy Hess (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg).
Erdman was hit by a pitch and Hess reached on an error by Millersville pitcher Eric St. Martine. Miscik was then thrown at trying to steal second before Garber hit a solo home run to left center, giving the Red Raiders their first lead, 6-5.
Sophomore Stephen Slatcoff (Windber, Pa./Windber) held the Marauders (8-18-1) scoreless in the sixth and earned his first collegiate victory in the seventh when Stecker scored. Stecker led off the top of the seventh with a single to left before stealing second. After advancing to third on a fly out to center field by sophomore Jared Boger (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), Stecker scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Brian Boylan (Tannersville, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) allowed two hits and one earned run in the seventh with two out, but picked up the save when Lance Stopper flied out to left to end the game.
In game two, Shippensburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, scoring two runs each in both the second and third innings. Stecker and junior Eric Perlozzo (Cumberland, Md./Bishop Walsh) each had RBI hits in the second before Wise's two-run homer to center field in the third added some needed insurance runs as Millersville would score two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a single to right by Jose Rosado.
Senior Brad Fitz (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) made his first start of the season in the second game, striking out six over four innings while scattering two hits in earning his first victory.
The Marauders scored both of their runs in the fifth off Shippensbug freshman Kyle Warner (Berrysburg, Pa./Upper Dauphin) who has totaled four innings in three appearances this year. Boylan retired all three batters he faced in the seventh to pick up his fifth save.
Shippensburg travels to Slippery Rock University on Friday for a doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park. The two teams will then face each other again in a doubleheader at Fairchild Field on Saturday.
