Shippensburg’s Wright Tabbed PSAC West Pitcher of the Week
April 9, 2007
SHIPPENBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University
sophomore hurler Matt Wright (McClure/Mid-West) was named Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference Western Division Pitcher of the Week on Mon.,
April 9.
Wright, the reigning PSAC Western Division Rookie of the Year, earned the
award after limiting PSAC Western Division foe Indiana (Pa.) to one run on
five hits while striking out eight in a complete game effort. His performance
led Shippensburg to an 8-1 win and kept them in a three-way tie for first
place atop the PSAC West.
It is the second-career weekly PSAC honor for Wright, having been named pitcher
of the week on May 1, 2006. Wright also makes it two-straight weeks for a
Red Raider to be honored, as junior Justin Garber (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) was the division’s player of the week last week.
So far this season, Wright has posted a 3-1 record with three complete games
and a 1.80 ERA. Opponents are hitting a paltry .192 against the lefty, and
he has 45 strikeouts against just 19 walks in 40 innings of work.
Wright also has two complete-game performances and has allowed just two runs
while striking out 14 batters in two starts against PSAC West opponents this
season.
His 2007 domination of conference hitters is a continuation of last season,
when he went 5-0 with four complete games and a 0.84 ERA in PSAC West games
as a freshman.
Shippensburg returns to action on Tue., April 10 at Indiana (Pa.). The first game of the PSAC Western Division doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
