WASHINGTON, Pa. - Shippensburg University senior Lee McClintock (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) broke the school record for career innings pitched Friday afternoon, but the California University (Pa.) baseball team swept both games of a doubleheader at Falconi Field, 3-2 and 9-4. Alex Lefcakis scored the game-winning run for the Vulcans in the bottom of the seventh of game one.
After Shippensburg tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning of game one, Lefcakis led off the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit triple to center field for California (Pa.) (12-9, 2-0 PSAC West) off Red Raider sophomore Ross Buckwalter (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) who had just entered the game in relief of McClintock.
The next Vulcan batter, Drew Aniceti, hit a walk off RBI-single to score Lefcakis and hand Shippensburg (14-15, 0-2 PSAC West) its sixth loss in its last seven road games. The Red Raiders are 10-10 in road games this season after losing game two of Friday's doubleheader.
Shippensburg tied the game on a RBI-single to left field by senior Ryan Miscik (Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant) in top of the sixth, scoring junior Scott Goss (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop).
McClintock scattered six hits over 6.0 innings and allowed only two runs while striking out three. For his career, he has totaled 248.2 innings, surpassing the previous career school record for innings pitched held by Mike Tandlmayer who totaled 245.1 innings from 1998-2001. McClintock broke the record in the third inning after retiring the Vulcans in order with three-straight ground outs, including the final out when Mike Larson grounded out to second to break the record.
Junior Jamie Mengle (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was 2-for-3 in game one while sophomore Jared Boger (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and junior Jeremy Hess (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster-Strasburg) each went 2-for-4.
Chris Doerschner pitched a complete game, four-hitter in game two for Cal, striking out eight in running his record to 4-1 this season. California (Pa.) broke the game wide-open in the fifth inning by scoring five runs to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 6-3 lead.
Larson tied the game with a double to right field with two outs that scored Aniceti and Jason Smith. With the bases loaded, Adam Balan hit a two-RBI single to right center to give Cal a 5-3 lead before Lefcakis provided the final run with a single to right, scoring Patrick Sadler.
Shippensburg cut the Vulcan lead to two in the sixth when Mengle hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring sophomore Justin Garber (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown). However, California (Pa.) scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to the eventual five-run victory.
The Red Raiders and the Vulcans are scheduled to face each other again on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Shippensburg's Fairchild Field. First pitch in game one is at 1:00 p.m.
