Baseball Raiders Edged By Millersville in 10 Innings, 9-8
March 28, 2005
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Despite using seven pitchers and committing five errors, the Millersville University baseball team was able to find enough offense to edge out a 9-8 victory over Shippensburg University in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon at Fairchild Field.
Trailing 8-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Red Raider junior Tyler Wise (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) hit a two-run homer to right center, scoring junior Nick Erdman (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) to tie the game and force extra innings.
However, in the top of the 10th, the Marauders’ Ricky Caravaggio hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Lance Stopper for the game-winning run to give Millersville (6-11-1) just its fourth victory in the last nine games.
As a team, Shippensburg (14-13) went 11-for-44, including 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The Red Raiders’ one through five hitters in the lineup combined to go 6-for-23 with two RBI and in the bottom of the 10th, the Marauders’ Rob Duvall retired Shippensburg’s top three in order with no outs and a runner on first.
Duvall played the first nine innings at first base for Millersville before making only his third appearance on the mound in the 10th, picking up his first save. Prior to this afternoon, he had totaled 1.1 innings in two previous games.
Shippensburg took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run homer to right center by senior Chad Stecker (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) that scored sophomore Justin Garber (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown). The Marauders tied the game in the top of the fourth, but the Red Raiders took a 6-2 lead after scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Six of
Shippensburg’s 11 hits came in the fourth inning, highlighted
by a two-RBI single by junior Jamie Mengle (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Cumberland Valley). The Red Raiders would hold onto a one-run lead after Millersville
scored three in the fifth to cut the Shippensburg lead to 6-5.
The Marauders added three more runs in the sixth and took their
first lead when Caravaggio singled to right
field, scoring Stopper and Mike Zdrojesky. Millersville held
its two-run advantage into the ninth
until
Wise tied the game with his
second home run of the season.
The Red Raiders return to action on Friday afternoon when they travel to face California University (Pa.) for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opener for both teams. The doubleheader from Falconi Field in Washington, Pa. starts at 1:00 p.m.- Red Raider Baseball -
