Starner Sets Record, Shippensburg Defeats East Stroudsburg
March 26, 2005
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University junior Nathan
Starner (Aspers, Pa./Biglersville) broke the school record for strikeouts in a seven-inning
game with 16, capping off a one-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory over East Stroudsburg
University in game one of a doubleheader at Fairchild Field. The Red Raiders
also emerged victorious in game two, 5-3.
The Red Raiders (14-12) have rebounded after losing 10 of 13 to win their
last three games. Shippensburg has gathered 30 hits in their three victories
after recording only 17 hits in losses to Bryant University and Millersville
University last weekend.
With his 16-strikeout performance, Starner moves past the old record of 14,
a feat previously shared by Jason Bennett and Jason Kanovich. He struck out
eight in a row at one point and recorded 10 strikeouts after only four innings.
The only threat registered against Starner came in the fourth inning when
Jacob DeBoer singled off the first base bag.
After stealing second, DeBoer would advance to third base with two outs on a passed ball, only to be stranded after a ground out ended the inning.
Shippensburg
opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after senior Chad
Stecker (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) led off with a single and stole
second. He later scored after stealing third base and advancing home on
an East Stroudsburg throwing error.
The Red Raiders added their second run in the bottom of the sixth. Stecker
walked to lead off the inning and subsequently stole his third base of
the game. Two batters later, junior Nick Erdman (Leloa, Pa./Conestoga
Valley) singled him home with a hit to left field.
In game two, Erdman started on the mound and Shippensburg would again grab
a first inning lead. Stecker hit a lead off double and eventually scored
on a groundout by junior Jamie Mengle (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley).
The team added two more runs in the third inning on an error and a RBI-single
by junior Tyler Wise (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) to take a 3-0 lead.
After East Stroudsburg cut the lead to 3-1, Shippensburg added two insurance
runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a much-needed 5-1 lead. Sophomore
Justin Garber (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) singled
home junior Jeremy
Hess (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and scored when
junior Ryan
Bucher (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) doubled to right center.
East
Stroudsburg threatened in the top of the seventh inning, as sophomore
Brian Boylan (Tannersville, Pa./Pocono Mountain) surrendered two runs on
a single by Mark Rennie. The tying run was stranded after Josh Johnson
grounded out to Mengle to end the game.
Shippensburg travels to Millersville University on Tuesday for a doubleheader
that begins at 1:00 p.m. The Marauders and Red Raiders split two games
of a doubleheader at Shippensburg back on March 19.
