Baseball Snaps Six-Game Losing Streak; Shuts Out Bryant, 7-0
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Frank D'Agostino
(Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) pitched six scoreless innings while
striking out six as the Shippensburg University baseball team snapped its
six-game losing
with a 7-0 victory over Bryant University on Friday afternoon at Fairchild
Field.
The Red Raiders (10-9) scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted
by a two-run single to right field by junior Tyler Wise (Bedford,
Pa./Bedford) with no outs, scoring junior Nick Erdman
(Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and
junior Eric Perlozzo (Cumberland, Md./Bishop Walsh).
Senior Chad Stecker (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) led off the inning
with a walk before Perlozzo singled up the middle then stole second. Stecker
would score the gameπs first run on a sacrifice fly to right by sophomore
Jared Boger (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest).
Sophomore Jamie Mengle (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) drove in the
final run of the inning for Shippensburg when he scored Wise on an RBI-double.
Mengle went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
DπAgostino allowed just one hit through six innings with that coming
on the second batter of the game when Mike Rocco doubled down the left field
line. From that point, D'Agostino retired 17 of the next 21 batters
he faced, including three-straight strikeouts in the second and third innings.
The Red Raiders added two more runs in the fourth on a RBI-double from senior
Ryan Miscik (Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant) and a RBI-single
by Stecker. Sophomore Justin Garber (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) drew
a one out, bases loaded walk to score sophomore Ryan Bucher (Lebanon,
Pa./Cedar Crest) for Shippensburg's final run.
The win was the Red Raiders' second of the season by shutout after Erdman
and sophomore Brian Boylan (Tannersville, Pa./Pocono Mountain) combined
for a two-hitter in a 3-0 victory at Mount Olive College on February 13.
Junior Brad Fitz (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle), in his first appearance
of the season, threw the final three innings for the Red Raiders, allowing
two hits and striking out two. Sophomore Brandon White (State College,
Pa./State College) entered the game in the sixth and was 2-for-2. Wise ended the day
1-for-4 with two RBI and a run.
Shippensburg returns to action on Saturday, hosting a doubleheader against
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division rival Millersville
University. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
