Mar. 7, 2008

Game 1 | Game 2

FT. PIERCE, Fla. - Senior Justin Garber (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) extended his hitting streak to 14 games and totaled eight RBIs as the Shippensburg University baseball team won its fourth-straight, totaling 37 runs in a 10-5 and 27-3 victory over Northwood (Mich.) Friday at the Lawnwood Complex.

Since starting the season 0-5 which including four-straight losses at No. 2-ranked Mount Olive, the Red Raiders (5-7) have won five of their last seven. During that time, Shippensburg has won two of three at No. 11-ranked Georgia College & State while averaging 11 runs per game.

The 27 runs scored by the Red Raiders in game two were the fourth-most scored in a game in school history, equaling the 27 scored against Philadelphia on April 6, 2000. The team's 27 hits were also the third-most in school history, just three shy of the school record.

Garber went a combined 6-for-11 in both games with eight RBIs and five runs scored as he has had at least one hit in all 12 games this season. He has also had 10 multi-hit games and in game two, went 4-for-5 with two home runs, seven RBIs and three runs scored.

The school record for RBIs in a game is nine set by Jeff Hair against Millersville on May 2, 1992.

A total of 13 Red Raiders had a hit in game two, seven of which had at least two. In addition, 11 players had at least one RBI while eight had at least two. Junior Kasey Kuhns (Three Springs/Southern Huntingdon) totaled five RBIs after going 3-for-5 with a solo home run. He also scored three runs.

Junior Tyler Redick (Fairfield/Walkersville (Md.)) also had four hits, going 4-for-5 with a two-run homer in the top of the first that was part of a six-run inning for Shippensburg while junior Kyle Rhoades (Brodheadsville/Pleasant Valley) went 3-for-7, finishing one at-bat short of the school record set by Garber at Georgia College & State on Mar. 4, 2006.

Sophomore Rick Shumway (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs. In eight games with the Red Raiders since transferring from West Chester, he has had at least one hit in six of those games, including four multi-hit games and three with at least three hits.

Shumway is currently hitting .483 this season, just seven points behind Garber's team-leading .490 average.

Shippensburg scored at least one run in six of its seven offensive innings, including six in the first, eight in the third and five in the sixth.

On the mound for the Red Raiders, junior Tim Freshour (Johnstown/Richland) picked up his team-leading third win of the season, scattering six hits and allowing three runs over four innings while striking out three.

Leading 21-3 after four innings, head coach Matt Jones was able to get the bullpen some work, using five pitchers in relief of Freshour, highlighted by freshman David Hughes (West Chester/West Chester Henderson) who struck out three of the four batters he faced in the sixth.

In game one, Shippensburg scored four runs in each of the first two innings to lead 8-2 after two, allowing junior Andrew Burke (Fayetteville/Chambersburg) to pick up his second win of the season, striking out six while allowing just five hits over five-and-a-third innings.

Garber homered to lead off the first, marking the second time this season that he has led off an inning with a home run for Shippensburg.

Freshman Kevin Miller (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) and Freshour led the Red Raiders offensively, each totaling three RBIs. Miller was 2-for-3 while Freshour went 2-for-4.

Shippensburg returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Post beginning at 10:00 a.m.
