Eckerd Takes Final Game of Series With Shippensburg, 6-1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College baseball team scored six unanswered
runs over the final three innings to take a 6-1 victory over Shippensburg
University in the final of a four-game series Sunday afternoon.
Joe Sinicola held Shippensburg (9-4) to only six hits through eight innings
while striking out four and allowing one unearned run to even his record
to 1-1 this season.
Trailing 1-0 after five innings, Eckerd (7-13) came out swinging in the bottom
of the sixth, collecting four hits. Patrick Bordieri singled to center field
and then stole second. He eventually scored on a Shippensburg error to tie
the game with one out. Tony Menendez singled to center, his only hit of the
game, to score Joe Savino and Sam DeVito, giving the Tritons a 3-1 lead.
Eckerd added one run in the seventh and two in the eighth for the final margin
of victory. Bordieri doubled to left field in the seventh to scoreCraig Albernaz
who scored four runs in the series. Alfredo Cabale's single to right field
in the eighth brought Albernaz home for the second time.
Junior Nick Erdman (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) scored early in the third
for Shippensburg on a Triton defensive error.
Sophomore Frank D'Agostino (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) took the loss for
the Red Raiders, falling to 0-1 this season after allowing seven hits and
four runs through 6 2/3 innings. Freshman Kyle Warner (Berrysburg,
Pa./Upper Daulphin) pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for Shippensburg, surrendering
two hits while facing eight batters.
Sophomore Jared Boger (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) went 2-for-4, but Shippensburg
left seven runners on base.
Eckerd and Shippensburg split the series, each taking two games. The Red
Raiders return to action on Tuesday with a nine-inning game at Saint Leo University.
