Shippensburg Splits Doubleheader with Eckerd
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Shippensburg University baseball
team split a doubleheader with Eckerd College on Saturday afternoon, dropping
the first
game 8-2, before winning the second game, 5-4, in eight innings.
Although Shippensburg (9-3) scored the first two runs in the
first game, a five-run second inning by the Trojans (6-13) put the game out
of reach for the Red Raiders.
Junior Nathan Starner (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) earned the loss, and goes
2-1 on the year. Sophomore Stephen Slatcoff (Windber, Pa./Windber) and senior
Drew Kyle (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) pitched two innings each in the contest.
Senior Chad Stecker (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) led Shippensburg at
the plate, going 2-for-4 in the loss.
In game two, Eckerd held a 4-3 lead before a triple from sophomore Scott
Goss (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) and a subsequent Eckerd error
sent Goss home to tie the game, 4-4.
Goss scored the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning for Shippensburg
while sophomore
Brian Boylan (Tannersville, Pa./Pocono Mt.) held off the
Trojans in the bottom of the inning for his second win of the year.
Also pitching for the Red Raiders in game two was sophomore Ross
Buckwalter (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) and sophomore Nathan
Jones (Lititz, Pa./Warwick).
Boylan and Goss each went 2-for-4 in the game and junior Eric
Perlozzo (Cumberland, Md./Bishop Walsh) went 1-for-3 with two
RBI.
Shippensburg concludes a four-game series with Eckerd on Sunday afternoon
at 2:00 p.m.
