Shippensburg Falls in Rain Shortened Contest at Mount Olive
Feb. 25, 2007
Box Score
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Mount Olive starter Judson Smith limited
Shippensburg to just one run on three hits through seven innings, and then
the rain set in over Mount Olive, N.C., ending the nine-inning game short and
giving Shippensburg its fourth-straight defeat.
While Shippensburg's (3-7) senior starter Stephen Slatcoff (Windber/Windber) hurled five innings and allowed just two runs on four hits, he suffered his second loss in as many decisions. Smith, meanwhile, improves to 2-1 on the season.
Both starters kept the opposition's offense off the board until the bottom of fourth when Erik Lovett plated Stephen Nordan with a sacrifice fly, giving Mount Olive a 1-0 lead. Mount Olive added to the lead the following inning when Anthony Williams was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice and then stole third. He then scored on a wild pitch from Slatcoff.
The Red Raiders cut into the lead in the top of the sixth when sophomore Scott Stern (Martinsburg/Central) scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Timothy Freshour (Johnstown/Richland). Junior Justin Garber (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) represented the tying run, but was left stranded on third.
In the bottom of the frame, Slatcoff gave way to senior Frank D'Agostino (Pine Grove/Pine Grove), but Mount Olive opened the game with three runs on two hits. Shippensburg stranded two more runners in the bottom of the inning, and the game was then called because of rain.
Shippensburg received hits from senior Scott Goss (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop), sophomore Jason Kelly (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and sophomore Kyle Rhoades (Brodheadsville/Pleasant Valley).
The second game of the doubleheader was also called because of rain. Shippensburg returns home and will play its home opener at Fairchild Field on Sat. March 3 against East Stroudsburg. The doubleheader is slated to start at 12 p.m.
