Shippensburg Baseball Takes Two From Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. - The Shippensburg University baseball team
swept a doubleheader with Wingate University on Saturday afternoon, winning
the first game, 5-2, and the second
game, 6-5.
Shippensburg (5-2) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of game one when
sophomore Jamie
Mengle (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) singled to drive
in junior
Tyler Wise (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) who reached
base with a double.
The Red Raiders scored again in the seventh and eighth innings. Junior Eric
Perlozzo (Cumberland, Md./Bishop Walsh) hit a double in the
seventh to score freshman Chad Griswold (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Altoona).
Wise hit his second double of the game in the eighth, and scored on a single
from
Mengle for
a 3-0 lead.
A two-RBI double from Wise in the ninth inning added two
insurance runs for Shippensburg, scoring Perlozzo and senior Chad
Stecker (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley). Wise went
3-for-5 in the game, with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
Wingate (3-10) got on the board in the ninth on a two-RBI single from Jon
Svanda.
Senior Lee McClintock (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) earned
his first win of the year, going the distance and striking out nine in the
victory. Andy
McKinney got the loss for Wingate.
In game two, the Red Raiders were able to take advantage of six Wingate errors
to score several runs. Junior Nick Erdman (Leola, Pa./Conestoga
Valley) scored
the first run of the game on an RBI-single from Wise in the first inning
and junior Brad
Berner (Media, Pa./Penncrest) scored
on an error in the second inning to give Shippensburg a 2-0 lead.
Wingate put its first run up in the fourth when Shaughn Neal scored on a
Red Raider error to
cut Shippensburg's lead to 2-1. The Red Raiders came back to score
two runs in the fifth inning as senior Ryan Miscik (Mt. Pleasant,
Pa./Mt. Pleasant) and Stecker each
took advantage of errors to score.
Sophomore Jared Bucher (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) gave Shippensburg its largest
lead of the game, 5-1, when he scored on an error in the top of the sixth
after reaching base with a double.
Wingate scored twice in the bottom of the sixth off a two run homerun from
Tim Bowman.
Shippensburg scored its final run in the top of the seventh. Miscik
singled up the middle and a throwing error sent him to third. He scored
when Stecker hit a sacrifice fly. Miscik went 3-for-3 in the game, scoring
twice.
Wingate would mount a comeback in the final inning, scoring two runs with
two outs, before relief pitcher freshman Kyle Warner (Berrysburg,
Pa./Upper Dauphin) got Dan Brooks to ground out to first base to
end the game. He pitched 1.2 innings, with two strikeouts. Starting pitcher
junior Nathan
Starner (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) earned his second victory
of the year, going 5.1 innings. He had three strikeouts.
Shippensburg plays Wingate again on Sunday, February 20 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
