Goss Drives in Four Runs in Shippensburg Loss at Wingate
Feb. 18, 2007
WINGATE, N.C. - Shippensburg senior Scott Goss (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) delivered three hits including a homer and four RBI, but the Wingate offense was more than up for the challenge, banging out 13 hits and taking advantage of four Ship errors en route to a 14-5 win over the Red Raiders Sunday afternoon.
Shippensburg (3-4) captured both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, but on Sunday, Wingate (4-7) struck early in the nine inning contest, pushing five runs acrossed the plate in the first inning. However, Goss got the Red Raiders on the board in the second with a solo shot to right field off of Wingate starter Lee Oxendine.
Ship's senior starter Frank D'Agostino (Pine Grove/Pine Grove) settled after a rough first inning and recorded 1-2-3 innings in the second and third to keep the Red Raiders in the game. And in the top of the fourth, sophomore Sean Killian (Columbia/Hempfield) drove in senior Jamie Mengle (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) with an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-2. With two runners on, junior Eric Dezell (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) drew a walk, loading the bases and putting the go-ahead run at the plate. But Oxedine forced junior Justin Garber (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) into a ground out to escape the jam.
Wingate added another in the fourth but Goss answered with his second RBI of the afternoon, singling in sophomore Kyle Rhoades (Brodheadsville/Pleasant Valley) to reduce the lead to 6-3.
However, Wingate quickly loaded the bases on D'Agostino in the bottom of the inning, ending his day. Ship's bullpen faired no better, though, and Wingate scored five times in the inning and three more times in the seventh.
Goss picked up his third and fourth RBIs in the seventh on a single.
D'Agostino (0-2) suffered the loss after working four innings. For Wingate, Oxedine allowed two runs in four innings, but Michael Manfro, despite giving up three runs in 2.1 innings of relief, earned his first win of the season.
The Red Raider offense finished the day with eight hits. Along with Goss' three, Killian added a pair of hits, and sophomore Tyler Redick (Fairfield/Walkersville (Md.)) contributed a single and a run scored.
Shippensburg returns to action on Feb. 24-25 in a weekend series against Mount Olive, who is currently ranked 27th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II poll.
