MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Mount Olive's Michael Williams pitched seven scoreless innings while Casey Hodges struck out four and allowed just five hits over six innings as the Trojans swept a doubleheader over Shippensburg in baseball Sunday afternoon at Scarborough Field, 13-0 and 5-0.
The second-ranked Trojans (12-1) extended their win streak to 10 in completing the four-game weekend sweep.
Junior Tyler Redick (Fairfield/Walkersville (Md.)) led the Red Raiders with four hits on the day as he went a combined 4-for-7, totaling two hits in each game.
As a team, Shippensburg (0-4) totaled 16 hits over the two games, but stranded 13 runners on base only four of which moved into scoring position. Meanwhile, Mount Olive exploded for 19 runs on 27 hits, led by Alex Vertcnik who went 4-for-6 with six RBIs. Josh Harrison added five RBIs.
In game one, The Trojans jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after two innings, highlighted by a four-run first inning. Harrison had a two-out, two-run single in the first while Vertcnik, who drove in the first run of the game added a two-run single in the bottom of the second.
Harrison singled in a run during a two-run fifth inning, then keyed a five-run sixth inning with a two-run triple. He finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs while Vertcnik was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Shippensburg junior Andrew Burke (Fayetteville/Chambersburg) got the start in game one, but struggled against a Trojan offense that is hitting .333 this season while averaging 8.2 runs per game.
After allowing six runs on five hits over the first two innings, Burke pitched a scoreless third and fourth before being touched up for two runs on five hits in the fifth. In five innings, he surrendered 11 hits and eight runs, only five of which were earned.
Leading 8-0 after five, Mount Olive put the game out of reach in the sixth when it added five runs on five hits against Red Raider freshman reliever David Hughes (West Chester/Henderson) in just two-thirds of an inning.
Freshman Alex Hartman (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) pitched the final two-and-a-third innings for the Red Raiders, allowing just three hits while striking out two.
Redick and junior Kasey Kuhns (Three Springs/Southern Huntingdon) each went 2-for-4 for the Red Raiders who stranded eight runners on base.
In game two, Mount Olive again got on the board early with two runs in the first two innings thanks to a sacrifice fly by Vertcnik in the first and an RBI-ground out by David Cooper in the second.
Leading 2-0 in the fifth, the Trojans added three runs to extend their lead to five, highlighted by an RBI-triple from Dylan Holton who would later score on a single by Vertcnik.
Shippensburg senior Brandon Geib (Lititz/Warwick) managed to work his way through the Mount Olive lineup with a little better success on the mound in game two, allowing seven hits and just five runs in fourth-and-a-third innings.
Red Raider junior Thomas Ashman (Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) faced six batters over the final inning and two-thirds, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
Offensively, Redick and senior Justin Garber (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) combined for four of Shippensburg's seven hits as each went 2-for-3.
