Red Raider Baseball Adds Two Assistant Coaches
Feb. 8, 2007
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg baseball
head coach Matt Jones, heading into his fist season, announced the addition
of Phil Kahn and Shippensburg graduate Jared Krebs as assistant coaches
to his staff.
Kahn and Krebs both bring a wealth of baseball experience to the coaching
staff.
Krebs, a Spring Grove native, graduated from Shippensburg in 2004 after spending
four seasons as a member of the baseball team. Not only was he a two-time
All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honoree, he was named Academic
All-District in 2004.
"It's great to have an alum on our coaching staff, said Jones. "It's
a tremendous asset to the staff to have someone who was recently in the players
in shoes. He gives us insight into how they approach the program. Being a
younger coach, he can communicate effectively with the players."
On the field, he appeared in 154 career games as an outfielder and designated
hitter, finishing his career with a .278 average and 85 RBIs. As a senior,
he helped Shippensburg to a school-record 43 wins by hitting .331. His teams
totaled 128 wins, a PSAC title and two NCAA regional berths in his fourth-year
career. Krebs is currently working as a teacher.
"We are exciting to have Phil and Jared on the staff," said Jones. "We
think that collectively, we offer three point of views and together we‚ll
be able to help the student athletes on and off the field."
Kahn, a 1981 graduate of Vasser College, has spent the last two seasons as
an assistant at his alma mater, where he has coached two All-Liberty League
performers, and the conference's player of the year. Kahn has also
served as the player/coach of the New York Nights, an amateur baseball team,
since 1995.
At Vasser, Kahn started the school's intercollegiate baseball program
in 1979 and served as the team‚s player/coach for two seasons. He went
on to earn a degree in law from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and worked
after several law firms, including Major League Baseball Enterprises, Inc.,
before opening his own firm in 2002. He currently works at his firm in Manhattan
while serving as a Ship assistant.
"Phil brings a different background to the table and the guys will benefit
from having him around," said Jones. "He's an intelligent, well-rounded person
and passionate and enthusiastic about the game of baseball."
The Red Raiders open their season with a doubleheader on Feb. 10 at West
Georgia.
