Red Raider Baseball to Host Instructional Clinics

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg baseball team, under the direction of first-year coach Matt Jones, will be hosting instructional clinics during the months of January and February.

The clinics, held inside of Heiges Field House, will take place on January 12, 19, 21, 26 and 28, as well as February 2 and 4. Jones takes over the Red Raider program after spending seven seasons and winning three conference championships at Elizabethtown College. During his tenure, he posted a record of 148-126-2.

Shippensburg has won 13 PSAC Championships and since 1971, the team has also made 22 PSAC Tournament appearances. Also, the Red Raiders have 18 NCAA Regional appearances to their credit. Since the program’s inception, 29 players have signed pro contracts, including 12 players since 1998.

Jones inherits a team that finished 31-24 last season and reached the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships for a fourth-straight season. The team was also ranked as high as No. 21 in Division II.

At season's end, Nathan Starner was named All-PSAC Western Division Pitcher of the Year and was a consensus selection as the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year by both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). He was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Matt Wright was named All-PSAC Western Division Rookie of the Year after tying for second in the PSAC in victories (7-1 record) and opponent batting average (.198). In 68 innings of work, he posted a 1.99 ERA and averaged 10.99 strikeouts per nine innings.
